Almost four years on since the Hypervenom was born on the sunny beaches of Rio de Janeiro, and things were a little colder for the arrival of the third-generation boot as we joined Nike in the Munich snow for the launch of the Hypervenom 3. Nike don't do half measures and their first attack of 2017 left the ball in the net and a Swoosh in the snow.
With the Hypervenom 3 centred around instinctive play and the art of finishing, the Munich event reflected the characteristics of the boot with Nike putting on a series of attacking experiences before calling on their leading stable of Hypervenom 3 players to showcase their new wheels – Gonzalo Higuain, Edinson Cavani, Harry Kane, Robert Lewandowski and the latest addition to the Hypervenom squad, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.
First up on the Hypervenom agenda was a trip to a sports complex on the edge of the city where Nike Senior Footwear Design Director, Nathan VanHook greeted and briefed us on the Nike Hypervenom Phantom 3 football boots before kitting us up and sending us back into the freezing temperatures to bring the heat to the pitch. Under the watchful eye of Nike Academy coach Jon Goodman and all-time World Cup record goalscorer Miroslav Klose we were put through a series of shooting drills to test the new tech on the next-generation boot.
That technology includes a full Flyknit upper with integrated multi-layered Poron foam pods and brand new Dynamic Fit Collar and soleplate. In more simple terms it's an upgrade on the previous generation with a locked down fit and new shooting tech that took us back to those T90 days. The soleplate excels too, but before we go off on a tech tangent you can get all that here. Back to the testing phase and just before Hypervenom turned into Hypothermia we were back on the Swoosh shuttle to the next stop – the Nike Hypervenom 3 event space.
Transforming a Munich film studio into a Hypervenom HQ, the spotlight was on a different type of star as the five Hypervenom professionals took to the stage for a live Q&A to talk about their new boots and current seasons. Disbursing to explore the set up further, the prolific pack hung around for chat before jetting back to their respective homes ahead of a weekend debut in the HV3.
