Memphis Depay Leaves Under Armour

21 year old Memphis Depay joined Under Armour back in 2015 as one of the brightest up-and-coming stars of the game. It was a big move for the American brand, and Depay’s status mirrored their own to a certain degree, as they continued to increase their influence in football. But as the years have rolled by that influence has waned, and Under Armour never really managed to take the next step in what was a promising trajectory. It was a similar story for Depay following his move to Manchester United, but unlike the brand he has managed to find form and rekindle his career with Olympique Lyon, to the point where it appears he has outgrown Under Armour.

Along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Depay has remained as one of the only big names under the Under Armour banner, receiving several signature editions over the years and being the face of several campaigns. But it looks as though his contract is up and he is looking for pastures new, after he was seen playing in Lyon’s 1-0 win over Rennes in the Nike Mercurial Vapor ‘Dragonfly’, the launch look for the next generation of the Swoosh’s iconic silo. Got an assist in them too.

Whether this means Depay is signing with Nike is unclear at this stage, all though it appears unlikely, with Nike not currently in any sort of recruitment drive – quite the opposite in fact. It’s more likely that Depay is another athlete currently enjoying the freedom of not having a boot contract, choosing his footwear based purely on comfort and style. The Dutchman has always been an expressive individual, and you can imagine that, like Hector Bellerin, he would revel in being able to wear whatever he wants, whenever he wants.

So what does this mean for Under Armour’s football player sponsorship? They’ve still got TAA, but this suggests that it will be unlikely that he will remain beyond his contract. Time will tell.
