The latest stop on our 'Framed' series saw Wayne Rooney's maiden MLS season with D.C. United come to a premature end as his side were beaten by visiting Columbus Crew in the first round of the Major League Soccer play-offs.
In a game typical of the play-offs there was drama in the night sky in Washington as the hosts eventually bowed out on a penalty shootout after 120 minutes of frantic football. The home side's brilliantly name Frederic Brilliant headed D.C. in front only for Crew to take the tie to extra-time thanks to Federico Higuain.
Higuain struck again in extra-time as Crew looked destined for the next round, only for D.C. United's Nick DeLeon to pull out an audacious strike to level up and take the game to penalties. Battling the conditions on a rough night in Washington, Rooney's penalty was saved and DeLeon blazed over as the former England captain signed off his first season Stateside without a fairytale ending.
