World Cup preparations continued for the USWNT with the next game in their so-called "Countdown to the Cup" fixture list. Playing for the first time at the Banc of California, it was also the first time that they had faced Belgium, and they were looking to continue their recent up turn in form. We got comfortable in the Golden State for the latest stop off in our ‘Framed’ series.
After some wobbles earlier in the year, the USWNT seem to be firing on all cylinders once more, evidenced here by their mauling of a woeful Belgian side. Alex Morgan returned to her home town for the first time since she netted her 100th International goal, but she had to settle for a place on the bench as veteran and fellow centurion, Carli Lloyd got the nod upfront. And it didn’t take long for Lloyd to take advantage, with a brace within the opening 20 minutes.
That whirlwind start set the tone for the match, with Belgium seemingly unable to defend against aerial attacks. Five of the eventual six goals were headers, with the only goal from the deck coming from the foot of Morgan, assisted wonderfully by Lloyd. The home fans were thrilled to see their returning daughter finding the net.
Aside from the action on the pitch, there was a nice tribute at half time, honouring the US team that won the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the former players in attendance. In truth, the action on the pitch was nothing more than a training exercise for the USWNT, but as they gear up for the summer, that’s exactly what they need. Job done in the most routine of fashions.
