Completing a hat-trick of USWNT World Cup winners, Abby Dahlkemper becomes the latest pro to pick up on the other end of the line for ‘The Dial Up’, our series that lifts the lid on life behind the scenes with the pros.
A striker in her formative years, Abby Dahlkemper is now a World Cup winning centre back. She was the only player alongside goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher to start every match of the tournament for the United States, but now, like Mal Pugh and Ashlyn Harris – her other two international teammates to feature on the serie – and the rest of us for that matter, she’s facing a very different challenge: how to stay entertained during a pandemic. But the resourceful American is having no problems there it would seem – five seasons of ’90 Day Fiancé’ is just the ticket apparently.
While Dahlkemper is making the most of the change of pace that the current crisis has provided, she’s also ready to get back to work. An inspirational figure to young girls across the world, she’s only too happy to use her status and position in the game to guide the next generation. And he knowledge isn’t just restricted to her experience on the pitch; you just try and stop her telling you about the benefits of air frying!
I remember the [USWNT] had a training camp in California, and I rode my bike over and had Abby Wambach and Kelley O’Hara sign a ball, and I still have that ball, which is funny because I’m teammates with Kelley and Abby’s still around the team. It’s a full circle moment”
I know how important it is to have role models to look up to when you’re younger, and people to relate to, so I at least just try to use the platform I’m given in a positive way, and hopefully I can help people and inspire them”
