Edwin Cerrillo: Carrying Culture, Chasing Greatness

Edwin Cerrillo’s journey to the top is long, unique, but it’s only just getting started. If he’s not holding it down in midfield for The Galaxy, he’s carrying around his family legacy with him wherever he goes. We chopped it up with the midfield general at the adidas Fútbol Society as part of the LA leg of the ON A PLATE series.

Football is more than just a game—it’s culture, identity, and history, all stitched into the fabric of the communities that live and breathe it. Nowhere is that more evident than in Los Angeles, a city where football and Mexican-American heritage collide in beautiful fashion. At SoccerBible’s On A Plate event, we celebrated that fusion with adidas and the stunning new México De Oro kit, bringing together players, creatives, and visionaries who embody the spirit of LA.

Among them was Edwin Cerrillo, LA Galaxy’s midfield maestro, who’s still settling into life in the City of Angels after arriving in 2023. We caught up with him to talk about what it means to rep his roots on and off the pitch, the energy of LA, and the moments that shaped his journey. From family sacrifices to Gold Cup inspirations, Cerrillo’s story is one of passion, pride, and purpose.

What’s the experience been like for you as an LA Galaxy player?

I joined LA Galaxy in August 2023, so it’s still pretty new, but it’s already been an incredible experience. I came in from out of town, away from my family for the first time, and joining this club has been special. We’ve already created some unforgettable memories.

What has it been like adjusting to life in LA?

It’s been eye-opening in the best way. Coming to LA, whether it's downtown or West Hollywood, you never know who you’ll run into. There’s this energy here—everyone is around everyone, regardless of who they are. And people just carry themselves like it’s normal. That’s what’s so cool about LA—it feels like a place where anything is possible, and you’re just part of it.

What role does Mexican culture play in the city of LA, and why is it important to you?

Mexican culture is the heartbeat of LA. You feel it everywhere—in the food, the music, the street art, the neighborhoods. It’s woven into the identity of the city, and for someone like me, it creates a real sense of belonging. Being Mexican-American and walking through a city that celebrates and reflects your roots is powerful. It’s a reminder that we’re not just guests here—we helped build this place. And that means a lot to me.

How would you describe your connection to your culture?

One word: passion. That’s what having Mexican heritage means to me. Whether it’s through food, holidays, or just everyday life, everything revolves around family, creativity, and connection. Our culture is so rich—it’s not just something we have, it’s something we are. Without it, I wouldn’t feel whole.

Do you feel like your culture is part of your identity as a player?

Completely. It’s who I am. Without that cultural foundation, I don’t know who Edwin would be. It gives me purpose and pride. It keeps me grounded and reminds me of where I come from—and who I’m playing for.

Your parents are also a big part of your journey. What does it mean to you to make them proud?

It’s everything. My parents are immigrants who sacrificed so much so I could have a chance at this life. They visit for a week at a time and catch as many games as they can. And no matter how often they come, the feeling never changes—it’s emotional, it’s powerful. Every time I step on the field, I carry them with me. It's something I’ll never take for granted.

What does it feel like to play professionally, especially on matchday?

It’s surreal. I remember watching games on TV, seeing players go out for warmups, imagining what that must feel like. Now, to be in that position, to walk out onto the field and know all eyes are on you—it’s everything I dreamed of. And knowing that my family is in the stands or watching at home? That makes every moment even more meaningful.

Is there a match from your childhood that inspired you?

Same one as Mauricio—the 2011 Gold Cup Final at the Rose Bowl. Gio’s goal? Unreal. I remember the house being packed, the TV being dragged outside, and the entire family losing it when that ball went in. It was a core memory. It still gives me goosebumps.

How do you see your future in this game?

I want to keep playing as long as I can. This isn’t just a job—it’s my passion. I wake up every day with a smile on my face, knowing I get to do what I love. That’s rare. And I want to keep representing not just myself, but my family, my culture, and all the kids out there who dream like I once did.
