During our latest trip to LA for the adidas Fútbol Society, as part of our ON A PLATE series, we spoke to The Galaxy’s finest defender, Mauricio Cuevas. Exploring the effects of personal heritage on his career, Cuevas talks about a culture rooted in passion and how it brings a sense of identity to his game.
It is called ‘The Beautiful Game’ for a reason. A sport rich in culture, identity and history. Los Angeles is a city full of Mexican American communities that live and breathe the game, displaying their passion whether it is on the pitch or through art and fashion. We came to LA to celebrate the blend of heritage and fashion for the México De Oro kit by bringing together the creatives and visionaries that represent what the city stands for.
One of the inspirations we spoke to was LA Galaxy defender Mauricio Cuevas. Cuevas, the born and bred Angelino, speaks about how family and heritage have helped build an identiy and style around the defender’s game and what LA means to him.
How would you describe your journey with LA Galaxy?
I’ve been with the Galaxy for three years now. It’s been a journey with a lot of ups and downs. My first year was tough, but last season was special—we won the US Open Cup Final, and to be part of that with my teammates was amazing. That’s a memory I’ll never forget.
You’re an LA native—what’s it like to play for your hometown team?
Being born and raised in LA, I really understand and feel the culture here. It’s such a unique city where you can truly be yourself. No one judges you, and I think that’s one of the best things about LA—it’s full of freedom and diversity. Getting to represent that on the field makes it even more special. It’s not just a job, it’s a dream come true.
What does it mean to you to play for the Galaxy?
It means everything. I like to say the LA Galaxy is the Real Madrid of the U.S.—there’s so much history, so much expectation. With that comes pressure, but we embrace it. We’re here for a reason. The pressure pushes us to be the best versions of ourselves, and it’s a blessing to represent this club and this city.
How does your culture influence your identity as a player?
My Mexican heritage is everything to me. Our culture is rooted in passion and family. Whether it’s Cinco de Mayo, Christmas, or just a weekend together—it’s all about coming together. That energy lives in me when I step on the field. It’s who I am. Without that culture, I don’t think I’d know who I am. It gives me my identity and a sense of home, no matter where I go.
How does it feel knowing your parents made sacrifices to give you this opportunity?
It’s the best feeling in the world. My parents are immigrants from Mexico, and I know everything they went through to give me a shot at this life. To now be living out their dream—it’s emotional, it’s powerful, and it fills me with pride. After every game, seeing them in the stands or knowing they’re watching—it never gets old. That feeling stays with you.
Do you remember a defining soccer memory from when you were growing up?
Definitely—the 2011 Gold Cup Final at the Rose Bowl. Giovani dos Santos scored that legendary goal against the U.S. and I remember watching it with 20 of my family members crammed into our little house. We even had the TV outside because there wasn’t enough room inside. When he scored, the whole place went crazy. I was wearing the black Mexico jersey that day too. That moment is burned into my memory.
What drives you to keep going in your career?
Honestly, I want to play until the wheels fall off. Where we come from, this opportunity means everything. It’s rare. It’s special. And I want to live this dream as long as I possibly can. My parents made tamales for a living—I saw their struggle every single day. Now I get to play soccer for mine. That’s not a job. That’s a blessing.
