Umbro already bring a massive amount of throwback appeal to the table, thanks to their deep heritage in the game. And now they mine that heritage, bringing back a strong Italia ’90 vibe for a two-piece collaborative capsule collection with Sapeur.
For those unfamiliar with Sapeur, they’re a German-based collective that have a keen interest in British terrace culture lifestyle – weird combo, right? Well they’ve now teamed up with Umbro to drop a two-piece capsule of a shirt and quarter-zip top that channels the spirit of the 90s, with a specific focus on England’s look in Italia ’90, combining it with some subtle nods to their own origin.
The shirt inverts the colourway of the England Italia ’90 shirt, beautifully recreating that classic collar and then adding a specific Umbro x Sapeur banding down the shoulders and arms. The Three Lions are replaced by a Sapeur club crest, which is framed by the Fichtekranz, a spruce wreath that symbolises the local "Ebbelwoi Culture”, seen on every traditional Apfelwein (Apple Wine) pub in the Frankfurt area – from where Sapeur originate. Their crossed umbrella logo then features subtly in a sublimated print through the body.
The shirt is joined by the quarter-zip top, which pays homage to the spirit of the terraces. The same Umbro x Sapeur banding again runs down the length of the arms, with the Umbro and Sapeur branding taking their places on the right and left of the chest respectively. Sapeur’s slogan “One Step Beyond” is then embroidered on the rear, at the base of the neck for a nice sign off.
