Washington Spirit have teamed up with Dead Dirt once again to send a love letter to the late ‘90s/early 2000’s Washington D.C. streetwear culture, through the form of a capsule collection. The capsule pays homage to a golden era of the city, celebrating underground music and art.
As per tradition at this time of year, NWSL side Washington Spirit join forces with Dead dirt for the annual ‘Cherry Blossom’ collection. Debuted last year, the Cherry Blossom capsules are designed to mirror the club’s identity and its hometown D.C. Designer Domo Wells, founder of Dead Dirt and previously announced as the team’s first creative director and merchandise designer, created a new era of culture and creativity for the club and brings the heat again for 2025.
This year’s Cherry Blossom acts as a love letter to Washington D.C.’s late 90’s/early 2000’s streetwear culture. Using innovative fashion designs, the pieces re-imagine retro styles to mould into the club’s identity and classic soccer aesthetics. It pays homage to a golden era of underground music scenes and iconic streetwear with four bespoke pieces.
One of the stand-out pieces from the capsule is a unique polo shirt, referencing vintage soccer looks from the 90’s. The piece fashions a dark green and black colourway across the body, with pink accents flashing across the detailing. ‘Spirit soccer club’ features where a sponsor would usually lie on a jersey, alongside the Spirit club crest which has been re-designed with floral touches. On the other side of the chest, a custom Domo Wells/Dead Dirt crest also features with pops of pink.
The capsule is brought to life with hometown creative powerhouses Lola Monroe and Darrel Britt-Gibson, whose stories reflect the spirit of the region – past and present. Trailblazer Monroe became the first woman rapper signed to Taylor Gang and since then has evolved into an actor, entrepreneur and mother. Since his breakout role in The Wire, Britt-Gibson has made his directional debut and seen so much success, his path a testament to creative evolution rooted in community.
