Two icons collide in Nike's latest football inspired trainer pack.
Coinciding with the completion of the 2014 Mercurial Fast Forward Series, Nike have released the Air Max 1 FB Mercurial Pack. Taking inspiration from Mercurial's of the past four World Cups, the trainers mirror the FF series, sharing the same colourways and even some materials seen on today's Mercurial Vapor.
The Fast Forward series drew inspiration from 16 years of football boot innovation from Nike, starting with the first ever speed boot worn by Ronaldo in the 1998 World Cup. Whilst the colourway given the the '98 FF Mercurial didn't mirror the original boots, subtle graphical elements paid homage to one of the most groundbreaking boots of all time.
The rest of the series consisted of silver '02 Mercurial - inspired inspired by Nike's first sub-200g boot which Ronaldo wore to score both goals in the 2002 World Cup final. The '06 Mercurial which featured the first ever carbon fibre heel-counter and the '10 Mercurial inspired by the Mercurial Vapor Superfly II worn at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Like the ground breaking boots of the Mercurial series, the Nike Air Max 1, which first launched in 1987, sparked a revolution in footwear design. With the shoes famous window, the invisible became visible and Nike Air cushioning forever changed how Nike designed running sneakers.
Now the two icons of their respective world's have come together. All four of the colourways given to the Nike 2014 Mercurial Fast Forward Series have been dropped on the Nike Air Max 1 template. Additionally the leather uppers of the trainers have been given a dimpled effect to further reference the Nike Mercurial Vapor IX.
