With the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo right around the corner, Nike have lifted the veil on a very special-looking Air Max 97 that takes inspiration from the ultimate prize on offer. The ‘Gold Medal’ Air Max sees the iconic silo given the midas touch, with an almost entirely gold look for a truly victorious vibe.

Nike recently revealed a special five-pack of Olympic Ring-coloured Air Max 97s ahead of the games, and now they follow that up with the decadent ‘Gold Medal’ Air Max 97. It sees the entire upper decked out in metallic gold with only the slightest hint of black trim appearing through the collar. The Swoosh branding on the mid panels and tongues are debossed as if it was a minted metal, and there are small hits of ribbon red on the heel pull and underfoot Swoosh.

The construction combines hits of mesh and leather, while reflective accents wrap around the upper, disguised unless in low light conditions. Tonal details are then seen on the branding, laces, tongue, heel and pull tabs, and midsole, and a gold gum rubber outsole finishes off the look.

While staying true to the iconic AM97 silhouette, the ‘Gold Medal’ design is a fitting execution, with gold being one of the AM97’s OG colourways. Whether this is part of a wider three-piece ‘Medal Pack’ isn’t known yet, but we can live to hope.

There's no official release date for the 'Gold Medal' Air Max 97 yet, but you can take a look at the future-inspired Air Max 2090 here.
