Football Talk - Dzeko linked with Milan move - 08/12/09

Wolfsburg have opened negotiations with Milan over a move for striker Edin Dzeko, according to the player's agent. The 23-year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international has impressed for Wolfsburg since his move from FK Teplice in 2007.

Dzeko, who was linked with a move to the Serie A club in the summer, is also reported to be a target for Manchester United. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has played down reports linking the forward to the club, although assistant Mike Phelan has hinted that the Premier League champions are interested in the player.

"I'm sure there are a number of teams looking at him," Phelan said. "Are we one of them? We are looking at talent all of the time and we are in there with the rest of them. He showed his threat in the game at Old Trafford and he appeals because he is a tall, skilful boy and in some ways he is an ideal player for the English league. He has stature, his feet are good and he is producing some good performances. I am sure everybody has looked at him."

However, Dzeko's agent Irfan Redzepagic has confirmed that Wolfsburg have been in contact with Milan since the summer, although he does not expect any deal to be done in the January transfer window.

"The contacts with Milan and Wolfsburg go back to the summer, but there are no conditions for a transfer," he said in the Daily Telegraph. "The player has a contract with Wolfsburg and he is busy in the Bundesliga. As things stand, I can exclude a January move."

Dzeko was instrumental in Wolfsburg's Bundesliga title triumph last season, scoring 36 goals in all competitions. Dzeko will have further opportunity to impress his admirers tonight as Wolfsburg face Manchester United in the final Champions League Group B tie. The German champions require a win to guarantee a place in the last 16, while United will be looking for the point that will ensure they top the group.
