Football Talk: Wayne Rooney Injury Drama for United and England

The night had started perfectly for Manchester United and Wayne Rooney, but ended in disaster and concern for the England striker as he limped off the pitch with a ankle injury.

It took only 64 seconds of the match for Rooney to get on the score sheet, smashing in Nani's deflected free-kick. However this was the last of the positives, with Ribery's low struck free-kick hitting Rooney to cannon into the goal past a stranded Van Der Sar.

Then, as the match neared it's conclusion, Rooney went down just inside his own half as he turned his right ankle. A double blow as the move resulted in Bayern's late winner, leaving Rooney to struggle off the pitch. Manchester United and England fans now wait in anticipation for the results of a scan, with the in-form striker are real doubt for Saturday's crunch Premier League game with title rivals Chelsea.

Rooney has been in scintillating form this season, so far scoring 34 goals in all competitions including 26 in 29 league matches. But now this injury casts a dark cloud over successes for club and country, with any extended spell on the sidelines surely a major blow for United's title run in.

England manager Fabio Capello will also be hoping that Rooney's injury is not too serious. The Three Lions face Mexico on 24 May in their next international, and the opening game of the World Cup is creeping up against the United States on 12th June.

The injury will bring about bad memories for England fans, who will be reminded of when Rooney was injured against Chelsea in the build-up to World Cup 2006 in Germany. Four years ago it was another infamous metatarsal injury barely six weeks before the tournament.

The spooky coincidence? Rooney wore Blue football boots in that match too! Of course, the same colour boots means nothing but being the massive football boots fans we are here at the SoccerBible, it had to be mentioned!
