Barcelona convincingly won El Clasico to open up a lead at the top of La Liga, while Roma now lead in Serie A for the first time this season. Elsewhere, none of the top four teams in Germany could win, and Marseille remain out in front in France.

Barcelona
won El Clasico to move three points clear of rivals Real Madrid at the top of the Primera Division. Lionel Messi continued his outstanding form by opening the scoring, before Pedro sealed the victory with Barca's second goal at the Bernabeu.

Third-placed Valencia were beaten 3-2 by Real Mallorca, to remain 21 points adrift of second place. While Sevilla grabbed a late goal for a 2-1 success over Malaga, to keep up with Mallorca in fourth place.

After Bayern Munich's Champions League exertions, the surrounding teams were unable to take full advantage, with none of the top four team able to record a victory.

Bayern Munich could only muster a 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen, and Schalke were stunned by Hannover 96, as the relegation threatened side recorded a 4-2 victory. Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund lost 1-0 at Mainz, VfB Stuttgart maintained their fine form with a fourth win on the spin against Hertha Berlin.

Roma climbed to the top of the Italian league, taking full advantage of another slip up from Inter Milan. Roma overcame Atalanta 2-1 to creep into a one-point lead, ahead of Jose Mourinho's men, who drew 2-2 at Fiorentina.

Third-placed AC Milan dropped of the pace slightly, after salvaging a point from their game against Catania thanks to two Marco Borriello goals. Elsewhere, Juventus edged out Cagliari, and there was a good victory for Parma over Napoli.

Marseille
are two points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table in France, following a crushing 4-1 victory over Nice. Goals came from Kone, Mbia, Valbuena and Diawara, before a last minute consolation goal for Nice.

Auxerre left it late to beat AS Nancy, scoring three minutes from time which moved them into second place in the league table. Ahead of high-flying Lyon, who were held to a 1-1 draw with Lille, and Montpellier who also stuttered. Meanwhile, Bordeaux'spoor week continued, following their exit from the Champions League, Bordeaux were reduced to 10 men in their game against PSG before slumping to a 3-1 defeat.
