SoccerBible World Cup Update - 18/06/10

There are some heavyweight teams in action on day 8 of the World Cup, with both Germany and England playing their crucial second games.

The World Cup has really come alive over the last few days with Argentina smashing four goals on day 7, and France succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against Mexico, after a less than inspired performance.

There's been plenty to discuss at the World Cup, along with some interesting boot spotting, some great team play and plenty to look forward to. Check out the SoccerBible's view on the latest goings on in South Africa...

Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Mexico)
Concord football boots

William Gallas (France)
  Nike Vapor Superfly Custom

Mexican legend Blanco smashed home a great penalty against France, despite a deceptively long run-up! Blanco is the face of Concord Soccer Shoes, and has his own Cauhtemoc range.

Gallas was playing a pair of customised pair of Vapor Superfly I football boots. Gallas had a soft ground carbon fibre sole-plate, and had attempted to cover the Nike Swoosh with some kind of yellow paint.

Thierry Henry (France)
Reebok Instante II Pro

Javier Hernandez (Mexico)
Nike Tiempo Legend III

If Henry had got onto the pitch he would have given the new Reebok Instante II Pro football boots their debut. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be for Henry, but we'll be keeping an eye out against South Africa to see if Henry again wears the new Instante.

Despite starting the World Cup wearing the Elite Legend football boots, new Manchester Untied striker Hernandez switched back into his white Tiempo Legend III football boots. And it was with good effect, as he scored Mexico's opening goal.

Argentina ran South Korea ragged, in one of the most impressive displays we've seen at the World Cup. Their 4-1 victory didn't flatter as their performance was worthy of four goals, and it was the last goal that really caught our eye as the Play of the Day.

Argentina attacked with speed and slick passing, combining to show great technique and team-play, which was finished off by the head of Higuain completing his hat-trick. Higuain started the move finding Messi in the middle, who passed to Aguero in the box, and with the outside of the boot Aguero expertly found Higuain unmarked at the back post.

England v Algeria (Group C)

Recent result in the World Cup have proven that England fans shouldn't be to disheartened about the 1-1 draw with the United States, and should be looking forward to putting their World Cup back on track against Algeria. Algeria though, know that defeat will mean elimination from the World Cup, making England versus Algeria our must watch game of the day.

England didn't fully utilise Wayne Rooney against the US, and will need to involve the Manchester United striker more if England are to pose a real attacking threat. Rooney has had a fantastic season wearing Nike T90 Laser III football boots, and will be hoping to excel wearing the Elite versions.

Like Rob Green, Algerian goalkeeper Fawzi Chouachi was also guilty of a goalkeeping error in their first game, although his was more costly as it led to defeat against Slovenia. Chouachi will be looking to rectify his error with a good showing against England, wearing the Uhlsport Fangmaschine Sudafrika goalkeeper gloves.

Like Spain and France before them, will England succumb to a shock defeat or will they get their World Cup campaign back on track?...have YOUR say and share your opinions on the World Cup!
