Behind The Scenes - New York Cosmos Launch
New York Cosmos are one of the world s most iconic football teams, so SoccerBible jumped at the chance to attend an exclusive launch party for Cosmos kit maker Umbro s Spring / Summer 2011 collection.
For one night only, SoccerBible was transported back to a 1970s New York block party, complete with hot dog stand and cop patrol car, all brilliantly staged in a disused building in London s trendy Shoreditch.
In the company of London s hottest fashionistas, Cosmos cheerleaders and a PelÉ lookalike, we took a sneak preview of the fantastic new Cosmos range.
The 2011 collection includes on-field performance wear as well as off-field lifestyle clothing inspired by the gear worn by the world s best players including PelÉ, Franz Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto.
The range takes its inspiration from the fashion during The Cosmos golden era. They won five national championships between 1971 and 1985 to become the most celebrated side in the history of soccer in the United States.
The colour scheme of bold green and yellow with crisp white and black tones gives the range a distinctly retro feel, with a modern twist. The attention to detail is exceptional, and all the products are made from quality materials - as you would expect from a tailored by Umbro range.
A 21st century revival is underway at The Cosmos as the club celebrates its 40th birthday. The club last played a competitive match in 1984, but aim to compete in the MLS and challenge the New York Red Bulls.
This ambition is matched by a stellar line-up in the boardroom, with French Maestro Eric Cantona as Director of Soccer and Brazil legend PelÉ as Honorary President.
