Champions League Ball - Designer Interview Marc Makowski

Champions League Ball - Designer Interview Marc Makowski

It's the ball that millions of football fans dream of kicking if they could play in the Champions League final, and which has opinions divided over whether you want to see it nestled in the back of the Manchester United or Barcelona goal! Ahead of the Wembley showpiece, SoccerBible caught up with Marc Makowski, the man with the honour of overseeing the design of the adidas Finale London football...

SB: What was the inspiration for the latest incarnation of the adidas Finale football?

MM:
Basically, the inspiration behind the design is Wembley being the iconic final for the 2011 Champions League.

SB: And you feel you've been able to reflect the Champions League and London with the ball's design?

MM: Yes, with the colours of the host city - red and blue - and then of course there's reference to the city itself, as you can see the lions of London. But we thought by talking to people and getting inspiration from the city, it's not just about tradition and about the classical part of London, I think London is also a metropolitan city, super-modern

and that should be reflected in the ball. We felt the popping 'top star' with the orange colourway is something that really stands out, so we could link both kind of themes within one ball design.

SB: How long does the process take from start to finish?

MM: We first did inspiration trips, and until you've got a first kind of sketched product it's about four to five months, and then of course the whole product development process, so I would say really starting the initial product process until it hits the market place is about 18-20 months.

SB: Obviously the Champions League final is one of the showpiece events in world football, how will you feel seeing the ball you designed on the centre spot ahead of kick-off?

MM:
It's a big feeling actually. It's just very special, it's already a special moment when you see it in the shop for the first time, but of course the first time it's on pitch seeing players play with it, that's basically why i'm there. I guess there's nothing better out there than seeing the ball you designed being played with by the world's best footballers.
