Copa America Final Preview - Paraguay vs Uruguay

Copa America Final Preview - Paraguay vs Uruguay

The 2007 Copa America was always going to be a hard act to follow, but this years tournament hasn't followed the script. Big names failed to flatter as Brazil and Argentina crashed out in a year lacking South American flair and creativity. Billed as the summers headline event, the tournament has failed to live up to expectations.

Nevertheless, two teams are left standing as Paraguay and Uruguay prepare to lock horns for the 2011 Copa America crown. If the football gods are just they will give the us the world's greatest final to make up for everything so far! Will Uruguay cement their place in Copa America history or will the ever persistent Paraguay defy the odds. Share your thoughts online, on Twitter and on Facebook

For Uruguay, 90 minutes (presumably more) separates them from history. Defeating Paraguay would capture the nations 15th Copa America title, bringing them level with Argentina for the most in history. Amazingly, a team that has yet to win a match all tournament stands in their way!

The Paraguay national team head into the 2011 Copa America Final without having won a single match in regular or extra time. A similar defensive approach is expected as they aim to counter the attacks of Suarez and co. If the final is to be settled from 12 yards out, you wouldn't bet against the Paraguayans.  One thing that can be said for Paraguay is that when they're called upon, they hold their nerve.

Clean sheets and success from the spot has carved Paraguay's route to the final. Stopping Uruguay and Luis Suarez from finding the back of the net could be their hardest challenge yet. Liverpool's number seven has been in top form all tournament, scoring twice in Uruguay's semifinal win. Add Diego Forlan, Alvaro Pereira, Diego Perez and Edison Cavani to that mix and the signs look ominous for Paraguay - but they won't care.

As Uruguayans make their way to Buenos Aires to support their team in search of a record Copa America title, there will be a worrying sense that Paraguay's fortune may not have run out yet. In a tournament full of shocks and surprises, anything could happen. Surely Paraguay can't win on penalties again?

What will be the outcome of the 2011 Copa America final? If the best football side wins, Uruguay will claim title number 15. But like we said, this tournament hasn't exactly followed the script. Share your thoughts with the SoccerBible community online, on Twitter and on Facebook.
