Fraizer Campbell Interview - Team GB

Fraizer Campbell Interview - Team GB

One of Britain's brightest young footballers sat down with SoccerBible to discuss the launch of the much talked about adidas Team GB football kit, along with who he'd like to see in the Olympic football squad and his all-time favourite pair of football boots.

Fraizer Campbell has had quite a meteoric rise in the last few months, after an ahead-of-schedule return from knee ligament surgery that was expected to see the young striker sidelined for 12 months! The adidas F50 star has scored some stunning goals since his return, and earned himself a call-up to the full England squad. Now with Team GB and the Olympics on the horizon, we sat down with Fraizer to talk about the kit, our medal chances and of course his football boots...

SoccerBible: What do you think of the new Team GB kit, it's quite different?

Fraizer Campbell: I really like it. It's not your typical football kit, but it makes me feel good when I'm in it, and that's what the thought behind it was, just the feel good factor so it's worked really well.

Did they give you a sneak preview, or is this genuinely the first time you saw it?

FC: I saw it late lastnight but that was in preparation for the unveiling, so didn't really get a chance to look at it. But today I've been able to have a really good look, and we all look like a proper GB squad, as everyone's kits are similar and I think it works really.

Being involved in the Olympics is special for any sportsmen, but is it more so with it being in the UK?

FC: Yes definitely. We might not get the chance to see another one in England, so it's a special occasion and it's nice that the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish people are getting involved and being a part of the GB team.

Looking ahead to the football tournament, who would you pick for a dream GB team?

FC: I think everyone would like to see David Beckham, he represents Great Britain better than anyone else out there. But I think anyone would be delighted to be a part of the GB team.

And how do you rate our chances to win a medal?

CS: We've got a good shout with some good youngsters who can play, so hopefully we can get together as a team and do well.

Any players and teams to look out for?

FC: Like any tournament everyone is going to put their best players forward. You've got to account for every team and just look after ourselves, make sure we put a strong squad out and perform very well.

Is it something the players have been talking about?

FC: Not really, but that's because it's relatively new and it's not often there's a Great Britain football team. It's all new, it's all fresh, and I think it's quite exciting thinking about the prospects of what could happen.

For you personally it would cap off a great return from injury, especially with your England call-up?

FC: Yeah the last few months have been fantastic, I couldn't have asked for much more. And this is another step, just being involved in the launch for the new kit, it's been a brilliant couple of months.

How has it been working with adidas on new products?

FC: Well as you can see adidas put a lot of technical detail and materials into the kit, and Stella McCartney has brought the style so I think they've complimented each other well. It's looking and feeling good.

How about the football boots?

FC: I've been wearing the F50's for a while now, and I haven't got a bad word about them.

What do you look for in your football boots?

FC: For me I've got to look down at my feet and think 'yeah they look nice', they've got to look pleasing on the eye. Obviously they're really light as well, so you feel that bit quicker. But I'd say the boots reflect the player you are.

Do you keep a collection of football boots at home?

CS: Yes I give them to my family, to my Mum and Dad, they've got pairs from my first ever games like my first International game.

We're big boot fans, so do you have any favourite old football boots?

FC: I remember my first favourite pair was the adidas Predators, the ones with the big ridges on the front, the Rapiers I think. They were my first pair that I remember thinking these are quality. And funnily enough it was my uncle who works for adidas who got me a pair!

Any particular requirements with a new pair of football boots?

FC: I like to wear them in training once or twice before I wear them in a game, but that said I wouldn't think twice about getting a fresh pair out for a game.
