76 And Counting! Messi Closes In On Müller Record

Leo Messi hit his 75th and 76th goal of 2012 in Barcelona's 4-1 win at Mallorca in the Spanish league on Sunday. His two goal brace saw him pass Pele's milestone of 75 goals scored in 1958 and come within nine of Gerd MÜller's all-time record of 85 goals for Bayern Munich in 1972.

The Argentine has nine games remaining to beat MÜller's 85 goal achievement, having already surpassed the German's previous record of goals scored in a European club season. Messi scored 73 goals for Barcelona in all competitions last season, beating MÜller's 67 goals scored for Bayern Munich in the 72-73 season.

Messi's prolific strike-rate means he is on course to add his name into the record books once more. Given his current form of 15 goals in 11 La Liga games, the fleet-footed f50 superstar is expected to reach the ten goals needed in Barca's renaming nine games of 2012 to beat MÜller's record.

Speaking on Messi reaching another goal-scoring milestone, Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova expressed his delight: Leo s records are spectacular. It s spectacular when you think that he scores so many goals. Some few players reach these numbers in seven or eight seasons, he does it in one.

Messi was in action wearing his new adidas f50 adizero boots. His two goals against Mallorca took his new-boots tally to three. Messi has rewritten the record books on countless occasions wearing the f50 adizero, but adidas would be extra delighted with this record if he is to surpass MÜller's 85 goals before the close of the year.

Lionel Messi is on course for another record. Can he score ten more goals in Barca's remaining nine fixtures or 2012? Join the conversation online, on Twitter and on Facebook.
