Aubameyang's £2,500 Crystal Encrusted Boots
Encrusted with 4,000 Swarovski crystals, Saint Etienne's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this week took boot customisation to a new level, as he warmed up for Ligue 1 action wearing a pair of the most outrageous boots to ever take to the field.
It took more than 50 hours to customise the striker's pair of Nike Mercurial Vapor football boots, which incorporate into the design the player's name, initials, number, club crest and colours. The cost was a cool £2,500, but Aubameyang was more than happy with the results when receiving the boots at the training ground.
The boots are of course a luxury item, because when performance counted Aubameyang opted not to wear the boots for competitive action, instead he wore them in the pre-match warm up. A wise move when thinking of ball feel and comfort, but also as his unique footwear might not have retained all 4,000 crystals!
Flash-style and eccentric design are traits attributed to Nike Mercurial Vapor wearers, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic two prime examples, but Gabon's Aubameyang has undoubtedly trumped his rival professionals.
Whether the boots are endorsed by Nike or not, Aubameyang has made sure his flash footwear doesn't upset the sponsor, as the Swoosh is clearly visible on both the instep and fore-area in Swarovski crystals.
Excessive? Yes. Ridiculously expensive? Yes. A performance boot? No. One of the most outrageous football boots ever? Yes! Opinions are sure to be divided on Aubameyang's new Vapor football boots, but at least we can all agree they're unique!
