"With My Respect and Admiration" - Messi Sends Gerd Müller Signed Barça Shirt

He's known as much for his humility and class as he is for his astounding football ability. Lionel Messi capped off a phenomenal year by breaking Gerd Muller's 40-year record for the most goals scored in a calender year. But he's not one to sit back in admiration for himself.

While 'Der Bomber' now has to live without that title to his name, he can at least boast a personalised signed Messi shirt, affectionately sent to him by the four time Ballon d'Or winner. The BarÇa superstar attached a message to his famous no.10 shirt, writin 'For Gerd Muller, with my respect and admiration. A hug. Leo.'

Gerd Muller scored 85 times in 1972 for Bayern Munich and West Germany - a record that stood until December 9th 2012 when Lionel Messi took his tally to 86 goals with an early double striker against Real Betis. The Argentine went on to end 2012 with a whopping 91 goals, after which he sent 67-year-old Muller a signed Barcelona shirt.

Messi was awarded with his fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or award this week, cementing his position as one of history's all time greats alongside the likes of Platini, Maradona, Cruyff and Pele. Records continue to fall with each match he plays. Soon the only records he'll have to break will be his own.
