Are flashy football boots about to enter a new era?

Tennis shoes on SoccerBible? Yep, and for good reason. Something you might have missed this past month, unless you were following the US Open, was Nike's 'Claim The Night' pack, which saw the brand's 'Flash Fabric' material used for the first time on their footwear.

Nike's 'Claim The Night' pack, which included the Nike Zoom Vapor 9 Tour, Air Max Courtballistec 4.3 and Air Max Cage tennis shoes, utilized Nike s Vapor Flash Fabric material which was first used on the US Olympic Windrunner jacket in 2012. So now the obvious question arises. A Nike Football 'Flash' pack? We certainly hope so.

The reflective material is comprised of of tiny glass beads that in Nike's words, 'can produce a stunning 400-candlepower reflectivity when lit.' We went hands-on with the Nike Air Max Cage tennis shoes to get a feel for the technology ourselves. What looks like an all-black tennis shoe in normal light is quickly transformed under the flash of a camera or spotlight.

Of course Lotto have already made the first move in the flash-footwear game with their recently released Lotto Solista model featuring a fully reflective upper. Adidas have also entered the race, lighting up their adizero Smoke SPOTLIGHT American football cleats.

With the technology already making a name for itself in sport, is it only a matter of time before Nike and adidas make their move in football? What Nike's 'Claim The Night' pack has revealed is their ability to integrate the fabric into various shoe designs. Unlike the Lotto Solista and the adizero Smoke SPOTLIGHT, Nike's designs don't use a fully reflective upper. Instead they're arranged to compliment the wider design of the shoe.

Lotto might have been first through the door, but it will be down to Nike or adidas to kick-start what could be an exciting new era for football boot aesthetics.

Is 'Flash Fabric' a technology you'd like Nike to bring to their football boots?
