Nike design custom Mercurial to mark USWNT striker's record.
Nike have created a one off pair of custom Mercurial IX boots for Abby Wambach in celebration of her world record breaking 159th international goal. The USA striker wore the boots in last night's 7-0 demolition of Mexico, in which she opened the scoring.
The Nike Mercurial Vapor IX Abby Wambach 159 features an orange to white gradient fade leather upper with the magic number shattered onto the side of the boot. The record breaker pays tribute to her teammates and family on the insole of the boot where the words If One of us is Good, Then All of us are Great are printed.
Wambach surpassed Mia Hamm s previous international record of 158 with her 159th in the USA s match against Korea in June and is showing no signs of slowing down after adding her 160th for her country last night. When you're goalscoring record is that good you deserve some recognition and that's exactly what Nike have delivered.
Wambach's incredible record began in 2001 and she's become a double Olympic gold medallist, 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year and a five-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year. Not a bad career. Not a bad boot either. At the rate Abby is going and still only 33 Nike might have to start thinking about how to celebrate her 200th.
