FC Barcelona have unveiled the latest developments in the Espai Barça project, work that will completely transform all FC Barcelona venues, including the iconic Camp Nou stadium. The new Camp Nou will eventually hold 105,000 spectators once the project is complete.
That expansion, along with a new roof, will maintain its club's reign as having the largest stadium in Europe. The Camp Nou will be joined by a new Palau Blaugrana (arena for basketball) for 12,500 spectators which will be built on the site of the current Mini Estadi, where the B and Youth Teams play. The proposal would include knocking down the Mini Estadi and building it near FC Barcelona’s Sports Center in Sant Joan Despí – it would take on the new name of Estadi Johan Cruyff.
Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao have recently moved into stunning new stadiums, Real Madrid have too released plans to tidy up the Bernabeu, and now Barcelona are ensuring the quality matches the quantity by giving the Camp Nou a timely spruce up. The full complex is expected to be completed by the 2023-2024 season, with a strong focus on the best practices in energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The whole project should cost a round €600m.
