Peeling back the layers of pain and anguish that surround the club, Netflix release Sunderland ’Til I Die, a docu-series about Sunderland’s attempt to bounce back to the Premier League in the 17/18 season, which ultimately ends with their relegation to the third tier of English football.
The eight episode behind-the-scenes series takes an in-depth look at Sunderland through the 2017/18 season, chronicling their attempts to instantly return to the Premier League following their relegation in the previous season.
Produced by Fulwell 73, a company owned by Sunderland fans and named after a stand at Roker Park, the club’s former home, the series delves into the issues at the club, with both internal and external viewpoints lending some startling clarity, and it looks at how the team's troubles on the pitch only serve to pull a city already on it’s knees even further down.
Unlike the glowing optimism of Amazon's recent ‘All or Nothing’ docu-series about Manchester City, this documentary focuses on the other end of the spectrum, dealing with the constant heartache that goes with supporting a club that has been in turmoil. But it’s the fans’ unfailing passion and sense of optimism, shining through despite so many reasons for it not to, that makes ‘Sunderland ’Til I Die’ compelling watching. Spoiler alert: They get relegated by Burton Albion...
Sunderland ’Til I Die is available on Netflix from today.
