Unapologetically Red, British garage DJ, Spoony sat down with us to lay out a special match day playlist with the Women’s World Cup in mind. With a long history in music, including a stint as a Radio 1 regular, combined with a pure love of the beautiful game, there can be few people that are as qualified for this task as Spoony.
Teaming up with the 36-piece Ignition Orchestra once more to reinterpret some of the most iconic UK garage tracks of all time at the Royal Albert Hall in London, one of the original godfathers of garage, DJ Spoony is releasing the third instalment of his celebrated ‘Garage Classical’ series. But between that and watching his beloved Liverpool conquer Europe once more, the original ‘Dreem Team’ member found the time to talk us through a playlist that he’s specifically put together with a focus on the Women’s World Cup.
From contemporary classics to just pure classical, this list's got it all. There's even some underlying messages of unity and teamwork thrown in for good measure. Sure to get the Lionesses roaring ahead of France, see what made Spoony's squad list, and click here to listen to it in full.
Destiny’s Child – Independent Women
A track that the Lioness’ should absolutely play in the changing room before the first game v Scotland. An absolute winner from Beyonce and her team mates.
The White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
It doesn’t matter who you support, what language you speak, this guitar riff doesn’t care. Team colours abandoned. Play and sing along….at the top of your voice.
Wookie – Battle
One of the best track to come out of the UK Garage scene. The beat makes you want to march, go into ‘Battle’.
Bob Marley – Three Little Birds
The whole team should hold hands in a circle and sing the words to this most beautiful of songs from the icon that is Robert Nesta Marley.
Shy FX feat Maverick Sabre - Call Me
One of my favourite tracks from Shy FX. If you like a beat to get you at it, this is a must.
P Diddy – Bad Boy 4 Life
Swap ‘Boy’ for ‘Girls’ and this can rock any changing room. Also gets the opposition you haven’t come to play.
Linkin Park feat Jay Z - Numb/Encore
Proof that team work conquers all. Two styles x one goal = Win.
Kwaku Asante – The Way That You Move
A bit of smooth, heart rate down, stretch easily along to a fave of mine from 2019.
Col3trane feat FKJ – Perfect Timing
Going thru your ‘job’, in your own thoughts. This will help you get there.
Beethoven – Moonlight Sonata
Before anyone says anything to you, just sit, listen and zone in.
