As a sign of their support for the U.S. armed forces, Philadelphia Union have unveiled a special limited-edition Camouflage adidas warm-up jersey that’s set to be worn by the team ahead of their Military Appreciation Game against Houston Dynamo on 11 August.
There’s been a real trend in prematch shirts recently, and nowhere is this more apparent than in MLS, with adidas rolling out uniform offerings to all teams in celebration or support of specific causes and events. And now Philadelphia Union have released a first look at the latest limited-edition warm-up jersey, which they will wear in honour of all service men and women as part of their special Military Appreciation night on 11 August.
As with the recent Independence Day and Pride warm-up jerseys, the Military Appreciation jersey will be rolled out to all teams in the MLS. Philadelphia Union are then taking their support of Military Appreciation further, hosting a special soccer tournament called Battle of the Branches. It’s set to be a 5-a-side tournament with teams made up of active and former military personnel on Battleship New Jersey, a former Navy battleship that is permanently docked just outside of Philadelphia.
The Union have put out an open invite to all active-duty military, as well as retired, reserve, DOD civilians, and friends and family playing in honour or memory of military, in the Philadelphia-area to assemble teams and compete in the tournament. There will be no cost to register and for each team that participates, the Union will make a donation to the USO and Battleship New Jersey. The winning team will receive the limited-edition adidas camo warm-up jerseys along with tickets to the Union’s Military Appreciation Game.
