With the chance of a top four finish hanging in the balance, Liverpool’s season comes down to the last game of the season, at home against Crystal Palace. And for the occasion, the Reds will debut their new home kit for the 21/22 season from Nike, with a design that harks back to an image-altering decision made by club legend Bill Shankly.
It’s probably fair to say that – last minute worldies from Alisson aside – this season hasn’t had many highlights for Liverpool fans, following the highs of the last few seasons. The Reds are probably quite looking forward to drawing a line under the 20/21 season and turning their attention to next season. And now they know what they’ll be wearing, with the reveal of the new Liverpool home shirt from Nike.
In 1964, Bill Shankly, the most iconic figure in Liverpool club history, made a decision that would alter the perception of Liverpool forever, introducing a full red kit, on the basis that it would provide his team with a psychological edge. The first time it was worn at Anfield he remarked that “there was a glow, like a fire was burning.” The psychological edge was borne of the theory that the flood red would signify 'power & danger’.
It is from this decision that Nike have taken creative inspiration when designing the Liverpool kit for the 21/22 season, with the iconic full red kit representing power, complimented by the injection of energy – a ‘glow' – in the form of Bright Crimson with the pin stripe lightning bolts representing danger. Additionally, the 'Liver-Lux' narrative is introduced in the back neck tape, creating a thread of high fashion inspired stripes that run throughout the entire collection. Liverpool fans will be hoping that their second ever Nike kit brings more joy than they had in their first.
“It’s great to see the perfect blend of our heritage and Nike’s product innovation for our new home kit,” says Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk. “Being part of the Swoosh family for years, they’ve been at the forefront of sustainable design and it goes a long way into making our sport a greener one.”
