With a fresh new look that’s inspired by the cracks in the walls of the city of São Paulo, Nike launch the Corinthians 2021/22 home shirt. The Brazilian side will debut the shirt on 16 June in their game against Red Bull Bragantino at Neo Quimica Arena.
Sport Club Corinthians Paulista has always prided itself on its inclusivity, embracing millions of fans – regardless of race, gender, ethnicity or religion. Taking inspiration from their barrier-breaking nature, Nike has nodded to the cracks in the very walls of the city of São Paulo itself, with a unique graphic overlay that provides the club with an completely bespoke and individual look for the 21/22 season.
The representation of the cracks in the walls of the city of São Paulo sees imperfect lines that bring the feeling of breaking down walls to life through the jersey. The inscription “Os Donos da Rua” appears at the nape of the neck. Also on the back, the initials “SCCP” are read inside the numbers, stylised by visual artist and graffiti artist Thiago Icone K. The shorts are completely black, with the Swoosh and the numbers in white, while the socks, predominantly white, also bear the club's stylised initials to complete the look.
“111 years ago, the first president, tailor Miguel Battaglia, in one of his first speeches stated that Corinthians would be the people's team and the people would make the team,” explained José Colagrossi, Marketing, Communication and Innovation superintendent at Corinthians. “The new shirt represents the totality of the fans and the struggle that Corinthians and Corinthians fans fight every day to live their dreams by pushing the limits.”
To portray Alma Corinthiana and the club's vanguard in the fight to break down barriers, Nike invited Slam poets Kimani and Lucão to launch the video “Vai na Alma”. Signed by the agency Wieden+Kennedy, the clip reinforces that in the madness of the stone jungle, with its walls and dialects, black and white is a trademark. Breaking walls, taboos, including and resisting, the Corinthians fan is synonymous with the love of the shirt.
Participating in the film were Monica Calazans, the first person vaccinated against COVID-19 in Brazil, Sandro Testinha, president of Associação Social Skate, Thiago Icone K, graffiti artist, Adipe Neto, chef, Lucas Mazzorchi, stylist, Derek Junior da Silva Gomes, welder, Adriana Marto, cyclist, Jaciara Tamara da Cruz Pereira, dog walker, João, janitor and Victor Souza Ribeiro, Drag Emilia.
