Completing the standard three-shirt-setup, adidas reveals the Real Madrid third jersey for the 2021/22 season, with a design that pays homage to the Kilometre Zero plaque in the heart of Madrid – one of the most famous and iconic attractions in the city which identifies the precise starting point of all the roads in Spain.
We probably know what anyone outside of Madrid – and more importantly Spain – is thinking... What the heck is the Kilometre Zero plaque? Well it is as we said above: a tourist attraction. Not on the level of Legoland or the Natural History Museum for us, but hey ho. Still, with inspiration in shirt design, it appears these days that anything will do. At least this one has a link to the Real Madrid third shirt though – albeit a tenuous one – given that it will worn on the road in European competitions by Los Blancos.
The jersey features the compass from the plaque, subtlety designed into a graphic that features as an all-over repeat artwork printed down the front and back of the shirt. It also takes cues from bold kit designs of the 90s with a Blast Emerald base colour.
As a marker for the city being the true centre of the country, the graphic has specifically been selected for the third jersey to represent the club in its European journey this season. The country and compass icon also features as a sign off on the inside of the shirt, allowing players to carry a strong connection to Spain with them on their travels.
The jersey is finished with a unique simplified monochrome club crest for the first time, further complementing the bold design.
