Atletico Madrid Unveil 21/22 Fourth Shirt

Continuing the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the change of name to Club Atlético de Madrid, Atletico Madrid unveil what is their fourth kit for the 21/22 season. It will be worn for the first time in the Copa de Rey round of 16 match against Real Sociedad, which will be played on 19 or 20 February at the Reale Arena.

On 1 January 1947, Club Atlético-Aviación changed its name to Club Atlético de Madrid. This season, the La Liga side have been celebrating the 75th anniversary of this moment in their history through the release of all of their kits so far, and this continues with the new fourth shirt, which has been produced in-house, as opposed to Nike providing something bespoke for the occasion. As a result the shirt seems a little uninspiring in all honesty, taking a basic red team wear template and adding the anniversary detail and switching to an older club crest that coincided with the change of name.

Despite the apparent lack of imagination in terms of design, the shirt is inspired by two historic moments in the club’s history: the first leg of the European Cup semi-final – which was played on April 10, 1974 against Celtic in Glasgow – and the 1985 Copa del Rey final that the club won against Athletic Club.

The fourth kit will be available, from 18 January, in a special commemorative box that includes a copy of the original document sent to clubs and institutions by Club Atlético-Aviación, officially communicating the change of name to Club Atlético de Madrid as of 1 January, 1947.
