With the start of the 2022 NWSL season on the horizon, Orlando Pride have unveiled their new secondary kit from Nike. Dubbed the ‘Luna Kit’, it takes inspiration from Florida’s Space Coast and NASA’s Artemis Lunar Exploration Program, which aims to land the first women and person of colour on the moon by 2025.
Following on from last year’s ‘Ad Astra’ kit, Orlando Pride have launched the ‘Luna Kit’, which will serve as the club’s secondary strip for the 2022/23 season, completing the space-themed story. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the last lunar landing, and the Luna Kit looks ahead to the future, to those who will continue breaking barriers and trailblazing in the aerospace industry.
The design of the jersey sees “Astronaut White” as the base colour, and it’s adorned with Moon Grey on the collar, sleeves and trim, which carries through to the shorts. The body of the kit showcases the texture of the Moon's surface and the orbital rings of the solar system also in Moon Grey. The back of the shirt features player names and numbers in Rocket Aluminum, a metallic sheen that is inspired by the thermal space blankets that protect spacecrafts, equipment, and astronauts from the temperature fluctuations outside of the Earth’s atmosphere.
On the inside of the neck, the words “To The Moon” can be found, reminding fans and players of the unlimited possibilities ahead. For the second-straight year, the kit is completed with a one-color, knockout Orlando Pride crest, this time embroidered in Space Black.
To sign off the design, a jock tag shows a depiction of the aforementioned Artemis, the Greek goddess and twin sister of Apollo, the latter whose namesake was used for NASA’s first lunar landing and exploration missions. An immortal, Artemis is known as the goddess of the hunt and the Moon, and was gifted with the power of perfect aim using her bow and arrow.
“We’re proud to again bring a kit to our fans and our players that represents something bigger than soccer, with roots in our local community but a story that connects to so many around the world,” said Orlando Pride SVP of Brand and Marketing Pedro Araujo. “Like the history-makers the Luna Kit pays tribute to, we’re excited to see our players wear this jersey on the field to continue inspiring the next generation of groundbreakers and pioneers.”
