Hoping to avoid relegation, Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart will look to channel the spirit of 1992 in their final game of the season, when they wear a special-edition shirt at home to 1. FC Köln.
VfB Stuttgart welcome Köln to the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Saturday 14 May for what is a huge match for both sides. Köln are looking to sneak into a European place, while at the other end of the table, Stuttgart are looking to avoid automatic relegation, although getting out of the relegation playoff place looks to be a task too great. And for the match, Die Schwaben will look to the happy memories of the famous 1991/92 title-winning campaign to inspire them as they wear a special edition kit from technical partner JAKO, based on the adidas design from that successful season.
Stuttgart fans will also be hoping that a precedent continues: VfB have won all four games in which they have worn a special-edition JAKO shirt, and they also boast an impressive record with other one-off jerseys. So given the club’s positive record with special-edition jerseys and their success in May 1992, VfB’s current players will wear the new special edition shirt as a lucky charm for their last Bundesliga home match of the season.
The design of the 1992 special edition shirt recreates the previous shirt’s look, with the white base joined by red panels, successfully combining the features of one of the most iconic VfB shirts off all time.
“The special jersey shows that through our close cooperation with JAKO, we’re always able to implement ideas that suit VfB perfectly and aren’t merely off-the-peg items,” said VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle. “The jersey ties in with the spirit of 1992, which should inspire us and bring us luck on Saturday against 1. FC Köln. We’ve always won in previous special-edition JAKO jerseys and we hope it stays that way.”
