Inspired by the club’s very identity, NWSL side Portland Thorns have unveiled their striking new away shirt from Nike for the 2023 campaign. The design sees the return of the club’s original crest, protected on the centre of the chest when away from home by surrounding thorns.
Portland Thorns have leant into their name and identity in the past for their jersey designs, and now they do so again with their new away jersey for 2023. Produced by Nike, it sees the return of the club’s Heritage mark, the original black, red and green crest that represented the club during its early seasons in the NWSL, and that’s. And for the first time in the club’s history, it takes up residence in a central position, punctuated by a dagger that sits under it, as the focal point of a unique tattoo-inspired design.
The cream-coloured base plays host to the roses that sprawl out across the shoulders and chest, which also features the team’s three stars for their three NWSL championships (2013, 2017, 2022) incorporated within, with the third star for the defending 2022 champs displayed prominently in a bold red colour under the collar. The year 2013 in Roman numerals sits either side of that star — a nod to the club’s roots and its inaugural NWSL season. A banner reading "Rose City til I die” weaves its way through the roses, while dark green trim features on the back of the collar and cuffs.
