Speed - Nike Mercurial Vapor V Football Boots - 02/03/09

Let SoccerBible introduce you to the evolution of the Mercurial speed range with the launch of the new Nike Mercurial Vapor V. Can this football boot live up to the high standard set by its' predecessor? Read on to find out..

The Mercurial range has quite a pedigree. Six of the last seven top goal scorers in the Premier League have rocketed to the top wearing a Mercurial boot, from Thierry Henry to Didier Drogba and Cristiano Ronaldo. The series symbolises speed, athleticism and deadly finishing. So how does the new Vapor V shape up?

On first impressions, you'll be forgiven for thinking this is a simple update. From the striking Max Orange/Silver colour way to the distinctive lace cover, Nike have adopted the motto of "if it's not broken..." with this release. The major enhancement to the Vapor V is the addition of Flywire technology, which not only makes the boot stronger but allows excees weight to be shaved off the overall package. Flywire technology works by placing strong filaments in specific postions across the upper of the boot, holding the foot in place and offering unrivalled support. Precisely where there are needed for a footballer.

The Vapor V was developed with the help and feedback from some of the world's top footballers, including Pato, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Robinho and Didier Drogba. The Flywire fits snugly into a medial panel on the instep of the boot, and allows for more flexibilty and adaptability to the wearer's foot. Even though these were designed with the pro's, your foot will fit just as comfortably and precisely when you slip on a pair. Grabbing the laces and pulling the upper tighter only increases the fit of the boot and you can feel the Flywire technology working to wrap around your foot - vital for players who want extra support and fit.

The Vapor V continues with a Teijin synthetic upper which is lighter and thinner than the Vapor 4 - but this doesn't make it any less flexible or responsive. The boot is engineered with this material as it allows greater moulding to the shape of the wearer's foot. The lace cover remains also, using a stretchy Daewoo synthetic material to create a very clean striking area. One of the main feedback points from the developement of this boot was where the players touch and control the ball at speed, and this has resulted in Nike creating a "speed touch area" at the front of the boot (roughly wear the swoosh sits) designed to carry more grip and ball feel.

The Mercurial Vapor V weighs in at 230g (for a US size 9) and is available in both firm and soft ground sole plates - the former featuring direct injected TPU studs and a familar arrangement. Both sole plates offer excellent traction and grip which is essential to beating defenders to the ball and getting the most from acceleration.

The Vapor V will launch on April 1st 2009, and is expected to retail at £130 GB. The boot can be pre-ordered from March 11th 2009, although you will have to wait until the following weekend to see them on the feet of your favourite Premier League player.

We can also reveal there will be a full series of Mercurial boots available at launch, including new editions of the Talaria, Steam and Veloci levels. These boots are perfect if your budget doesn't stretch to the pro or elite level editions, and you can get the look and feel of the fastest boots around for a fraction of the price. Expect the Talaria's to retail around £75, Steams at £55 and Veloci series should be available for £40 (all GBP). Of course there will be junior sizes available in these three tiers as well from March 11th.
