Mizuno have re-released an absolute boot classic - the Mizuno Wave Cup football boots. But as a tribute to the boot's most famous wearer, Brazilian playmaker Rivaldo, these Limited Edition versions have been given a samba makeover. Check out the SoccerBible's full and exclusive gallery...
It was back in the new year that SoccerBible opened our Boot Vault to take a look at the original classic Mizuno Wave Cup football boots, and we weren't surprised that the boots received a warm welcome, with glowing nostalgic reviews of a comfortable and soft boot upper.
Imagine our joy then, when we heard that Mizuno were planning to launch a Special Edition Mizuno Wave Cup football boot. We were straight on the phone to our friends at Mizuno to make sure we could get a pair to SoccerBible HQ, to give our fans a good look at these new releases.
The Mizuno Wave Cup Rivaldo football boots may not be the world's best known boot, but they certainly fall into the elite category. Released in 2002, the Mizuno Wave Cup adorned the feet of one of the finest playmakers in the modern history of the game.
Made from extremely soft and comfortable kangaroo leather, the Mizuno Wave Cup Rivaldo football boots were famed for delivering what a player really needs on the field. Comfortable, light and providing great feel for the ball, these modern Wave Cup football boots offer a new generation of footballers the chance to experience one of football's great performers.
Technically, the Wave Cup's could boast being one of the first incarnations of the now famous Mizuno Wave outsole, and paved the way for future sole-plates and stud configurations. The firm ground outsole of the Mizuno Wave Cup football boots featured Rivaldo s signature stud configuration, and we're pleased to see that this outsole has been replicated - even down to hexagonal design features!
But why all the fuss about a player that a new generation of football fans may not have even heard of? Well, we can fill you in on that one because as a player, Rivaldo was a bit special. A traditional Brazilian playmaker, Rivaldo had skill, flair and technique and he guided his nation to the World Cup in 2002. But his most famous game was probably when he scored a hat-trick for Barcelona against Valencia to win 3-2 in their last game of the season, with Rivaldo's third goal an audacious bicycle kick from the edge of the area in the 90th minute of the game!
The Mizuno Wave Cup football boots fit and look great, they have received a touch of Brazilian colourway, and the bespoke Brazilian flag embroided into the boot heel is a classy addition. Extremely light and offering high levels of comfort, with a soft leather providing excellent touch and a super feel for the ball, we're sure this re-release is going to please a lot of traditional boot fans.
The Mizuno Wave Cup football boots are available to pre-order now ahead of a 1st December release, but they may have to be an addition to the Christmas list for many fans, as these Limited Edition football boots are expected to cost around £200 GBP. But even if you're not a buyer, it's still been great to showcase a boot that would quite rightly claim it's place in the football boots hall of fame.
