Since Nike became Umbro's parent company there has been quite a revolution in the boots coming out of the Greater Manchester based company. Nike's influence has seen some lightweight and sleek football boots leaving the Umbro production line, yet this new GT is the first boot where we can really see Nike's influence, as we can't help but think Elite when we see the colourway.
When Umbro first released their GT football boots, the biggest question on everyone's lips was whether they challenge the superiority of speed giants adidas and Nike. The design is sleek, strong and lightweight and the upper reminds us of the much loved Vapor III, so all the ingredients are in place but whether this boot has had mainstream influence is another matter.
The two colourways being released are certainly bold enough to remind us of the Umbro GT's presence, yet we are still to see a large player uptake. Indeed, the flagship wearer of the Umbro GT Darren Bent is currently wearing the Speciali boots, although Umbro assure us this is because they are building a bespoke and much customised version for Bent.
The new GT is crafted from a soft Japanese Teijin micro-fibre, which Umbro claim gives greater comfort and fit. Providing a snug and glove-like fit all over, especially across the toes and striking area, the upper itself is a one piece, meaning no seams and reduced weight.
Giving the Umbro GT a distinctive look, is the TPU upper "A-Frame Cradle", a proud piece of Umbro technology. This functional component supports the midfoot area and aids heel lock and the overall fit - something carried over from the successful Speciali series. There are plenty of "strategically placed" perforations across the ankle collar, tongue and sockliner to aid cooling and further reduce weight.
This GT is Umbro's lightest ever football boot, weighing in at 236 grams (for a UK size 8 HG). We accept that this may be some way off the likes of the adiZero and v1.10, but it does still mark a significant acheivement for Umbro. Combined with the other performance enhancements (and not to mention the sub-£100 price) the Umbro GT should be a serious contender if you are in the market for a new speed football boot.
The Umbro GT football boots are further complimented by a variety of performance attributes - a TPU medial striking zone increases ball touch, accuracy and control especially in wet conditions. Whilst a pre-formed and coutoured internal heel counter adds additional protection and stability.
Despite not being a huge player uptake for the Umbro GT's, the boot is actually a great performer and surprised us in our Play Test, it's just unfortunate they are in a very compertitive market. The Umbro GT football boots are available to pre-order now ahead of a 1st December general release, and impressively, these top end performance boots are a very reasonable price in the current boots climate - the Umbro GT will only set you back around £85 GBP / $140 USD!
