Nike Mercurial Veloce Football Boots - Fireberry//Sunset

The launch of the new Mercurial Collection has seen Nike introduce a new tier boot, which has understandably gone under the radar. The Mercurial Veloce is a significant step up from Nike in the lucrative take-down market, and comes in to replace both the Miracle and Glide.

The Veloce models create a more than strong connection with the Vapor in terms of aesthetics, and the performance is a significant mark-up from Nike compared to previous Mercurial incarnations. The paintwork, Swoosh and Mercurial branding is almost the same on both models, however there are a few visual keys such as the missing 'ACC' on the tongue and the red-tipped studs.

The Nike Mercurial Veloce weighs in at a respectable 220g, and features a microfiber upper textured with de-bossed microgrooves to reduce air resistance and help improve ball control at high speeds. There is of course no All Conditions Control (ACC) technology to benefit the wearer in wet conditions, and the material is not as thin or flexible as with the elite Vapor IX.

The Vapor Traction System mirrors that of the Vapor, with the same configuration but not quite with the same clean-cut mechanics and lightweight materials. But there is the Forefoot Grip Zone, inspired by track spikes, to provides toe-off traction for acceleration. The chassis may not be full length like the Vapor, but does integrate glass-fibre composite to provide support and stability.

It's a measure of Nike's attention to detail and commitment to improve performance, they have re-evaluated their second tier footwear. Their Mercurial Vapor IX has been developed and packed with innovative thinking to deliver lightweight performance, optimize explosive speed, ball touch and support. Quite clearly the Veloce does not meet these standards. But for a take-down it's the closest Nike have been prepared to get, with the added bonus they bear an uncanny resemblance to the elite counterpart.

The Fireberry/Green/Red/White and Sunset/Volt/Crimson/Black Nike Mercurial Veloce football boots are available in FG/SG/AG plates, retailing at a price around £90.00 GBP / €110.00 EURO / $120.00 USD.
