The esteemed Copa collection moves into a limited edition space as adidas celebrate their 70th anniversary by remixing the most iconic football boot of all time. This here is the COPA70; a boot that represents a marriage of generations and a symbol of adidas Football innovation.
The new year marks the 70th birthday of a little known German sports brand called adidas. Celebrating a landmark year since their humble beginnings in 1949, adidas will no doubt have a number of special edition releases lined-up throughout the next 12 months, but they've kicked things off in sublime style with this re-creation of the Copa Mundial which blends iconic aesthetic with modern mechanics.
The COPA70 is based upon the original COPA from 1982 but features a Primeknit upper on top of the new COPA 19+ soleplate for a mash-up that represents the evolution of the brand in football over the last seven decades. Past meets present in a premium place.
Primeknit is used on the outside of the boot to represent where adidas are today, whereas the leather is used as lining to show where it all started from in football. Red studs have been included, a reference to the look which was developed in the 1970s, and an original bluebird logo is placed on the tongue of the boot. The boot is also sold in special packaging and can be purchased with either the modern style short laces or the more retro long laces.
The laces choice may be irrelevant if you're keeping them firmly as a collectors item, but one man who will be making that decision is Juventus' Paulo Dybala who will be the only adidas player to wear the COPA70 football boots on-pitch. Fingers crossed for double-wrapped-around-laces from the Argentine forward.
The COPA70 football boots will be available in restricted numbers, in Firm Ground only. However, adidas have also released two sneaker editions of the boot with the same prime knit uppers (in black and white) but on a transformed sole that will carry the design seamlessly into a lifestyle and streetwear market that can't get enough of throwback football. Oh, and a clothing collection too. Expect the boots to set you back €250, while the trainers will retail for around €150.
