PUMA Launch The King Ultimate 'Icon'

Celebrating 55 years of the King and representing the icons that have worn the boots over the years, PUMA has released the King Ultimate ‘Icon’ edition. The Formstrip branding is a mixture of gradients, representing the stars that have laced up the famous silo in its five-plus decades.

In the vision of Rudolf Dassler, who first created the King in 1968, it was to be made of the best materials, have the best cut and be worn by the best players – real leaders. And indeed, for 55 years the King has been worn by some of the world's leading players – creating moments, redefining expectations and shaping football. The King Ultimate ‘Icon’ Edition celebrates the legends of the King’s past by featuring a multi-coloured Formstrip that combines the signature national colours of the immortal King icons, honouring the number 10s (and the number 14) who redefined the game in each of their generations and co-wrote the legend of PUMA King.

That crisp white base is the perfect base for the Formstrip, upon which all attention is drawn. That multi-coloured effect is made up of Blue (Maradona), Yellow (Pele), Orange (Cruyff), Red (Eusebio) and White (Matthaus).

The most notable change in a tech perspective from what’s come before for the King is the departure from K-leather – an element that has been integral to the DNA of the boot for its five and a half decade existence. But K-leather has been replaced by something even better… K-Better. It’s an innovative, environmentally conscious upper material that looks like leather, feels like leather and plays like leather. All that and it’s more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

Recycled from industrial waste, The K-Better material is a synthetic, non-animal base that boasts the same softness as K-leather, whilst being 30 percent thinner, twice as stretchy, providing a better fit for longer, and 10 times more durable. All in all, it’s quite the revolution.

The King Ultimate 'Icon' is the latest in a line of recent colour options for the new silo following the launch edition, with it lining up alongside the inline 'Pursuit Pack', the darker 'Eclipse' edition, and the artistic 'Elements Pack'.
