Nike Unveil Second Mercurial Vapor I RGN as 'CR7 Origins'

Nike have unveiled the second re-release of the Mercurial Vapor I RGN's, this time refurbishing the iconic “Black Cinder Maize” colourway that a young Cristiano Ronaldo wore during his professional debut.

As a brand who have often stayed looking forward into the future rather than living in the past, Nike have stayed hesitant on raiding into the archives to take inspiration for future drops. However, the Swoosh gifted us with an unprecedented re-release of the original Mercurial Vapor I in the iconic ‘Chrome/Lime’ colourway – made famous by prime R9 at the 2002 world cup. Seeing the unbelievable success of this drop, Nike return with another re-release of the Mercurial Vapor I, this time dressed in the “Black Cinder Maize” colourway – most famously donned by a young Cristiano Ronaldo.

Take it back to August 14 2002. A 17-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo comes on for Sporting Lisbon to make his professional debut. Wearing none other but the esteemed Mercurial Vapor I’s. We all know what he turned into after this. The latest Nike drop focuses on this momentous occasion, re-releasing the colourway that young Ronaldo wore at the beginning of his professional journey.

The boot arrives almost identical to the original – the ‘cinder’ base, yellow accents, the established branding, and that iconic mini tongue. A classic. The re-release also adorns some new visual features, including the date of Cristiano’s debut stamped onto the insole. We see the same soleplate seen on the latest Mercurials, with the cutting edge ‘spine’ – like design.

This release arrives as a limited-edition drop, with only 7777 available (a nod to Cristiano’s esteemed number 7 worn throughout his career).

Expect to see the man himself lacing these up from this week onwards. We can’t wait to see Cristiano repping that classic colourway once again, serious nostalgia for every CR7 fan.
